MINEHEAD 2nd XI hosted second in the table South Petherton in Division Three of the Somerset Cricket League on Saturday afternoon, at the end of which it was the home side who ran out the winners by eight wickets.
After choosing to bat first Braden Taylor made the breakthrough for Minehead when he removed opener Sam Palmer for 11, which he then followed by claiming the wicket of new batter Joel Harris. Paul Acreman, the other opener, then shared a large partnership with Oliver Simpson-Barnes before Anan Rajan accounted for both 39 and 74 respectively.
Rajan was proving to be quite a handful and claimed another three wickets as South Petherton were bowled out for 207 in 40 overs. Rajan ended with five for 44 from his eight overs, Lewis Goodrum two for 46 and Taylor two for 32.
When the home side replied they got off to a good start - thanks to Jonah Hopkins who made 43 and Oli Ahern with 33. Once both openers were out skipper Charlie Payne and Gary Bennett continued the chase together and remained unbeaten as Minehead reached 208 for two wickets with almost ten overs to spare. Payne was unbeaten on 51 while Bennett was not out 65.
This result was Minehead Second XI’s fifth victory in this year’s league campaign and sees them into fourth place, 16 points behind thrid placed Cheddar who have a game in hand.
The runaway league leaders are Taunton Indian CC who have amassed 325 points from their 10 matches to date, nine of which have been won while the other was cancelled due to the weather.
This coming weekend, July 19, Minehead Second XI travel to South Somerset to take on Chard Seconds who are in eighth place in Division Three of the Somerset Cricket League.
