SUNDAY, August 16, was a big day for Minehead Cricket Club when they hosted the finals of the two West Somerset Cricket League Cups.
First up starting at 11.00am was the Stuart Albutt Memorial Shield final between Stogumber Second XI and Minehead Third XI, which was followed in the afternoon by the final of the WSCL KO Cup which was played between Watchet and Stogumber First XI.
In the Stuart Albutt Shield Final, a trophy named in memory of the man, the toss was won by Stogumber Seconds who, after choosing to bat first, slipped to 34 for 2, both wickets falling to Sreejith Anilkumar. However, a partnership for the third wicket between Sam Batten who made 26 and Justin Hayward who hit 23, saw the score to 70.
Later in the innings Jacob Webster (14) and James Freeman (11) both made valuable runs to enable Stogumber to post 126 for 9 from their 20 overs.
For Minehead Nick Maggs took 3 for 15, Amol Rajan 2 for 19 and Anilkumar 2 for 23.
When Minehead replied they lost a wicket early on before skipper Steve Archer and Renjeesh Krishnan put on 89 together when the latter was bowled by Freeman for a whirlwind 62 scored off just 25 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes.
Archer stayed to see up three figures before he departed for 29 after which Adilthyan Rajan with an unbeaten 21 off 10 balls saw Minehead to 127 without further loss to see the hosting club side to victory by six wickets with eight overs to spare.
Having already won the West Somerset Cricket League Division Three league title to add this trophy to their tally underlines just how successful this season has been for Minehead Thirds.
