CUTCOMBE Cricket Club won the first ever trophy in their 150 year history after beating Minehead Third XI by seven wickets in the final of the Stuart Allbut Memorial Shield which was played at Stogumber’s attractive ground on Sunday.

After being asked to bat first Minehead were bowled out for 61 in 14.5 overs, of which both Althaf Navas and Jithin Rajan both made 19, while for Cutcombe Elliott Binding took three for 10 and James Gregory three for 16.

When Cutcombe batted Rajan claimed two early wickets and Ben Cobb had Lennon Howe caught by Harry Swann for four before skipper Ben Gregory joined opener Mark Matravers. The pair stayed together to see Cutcombe to 62 for three in 13 overs, Matravers unbeaten on 18 and Gregory not out 16. Jithin Rajan took two for 10 from his four overs.

The previous afternoon Cutcombe had hosted Bishops Hull Seconds in Division Three of the WSCL. After opting to bat Bishops Hull openers Mark Hallas with 13 and Adrian Lock who made 14 gave them a good start, but once they were both out only Jack Hiett, with an unbeaten 26, provided any resistance as the visitors were all out for 75, in 19.5 overs.

Elliott Binding was the pick of the Cutcombe attack taking five wickets for just eight runs from his 4.4 overs, two of which were maidens, while Ben Pursey claimed three for 21.

When Cutcombe replied Matravers led the way with an unbeaten 44 to see his side to 76 for six in 16 overs as the hosts recorded a four-wicket victory, their seventh league win of the season.

This result sees Cutcombe in third place in the league table, three points behind Cannington, who have played the same number of matches.
