YOUNG people in Watchet put their entrepreneurial skills to the test in a fundraiser to showcase their abilities. The newly formed Watchet Youth Council was behind the 'Youth Enterprise Day' held in the town last Saturday - the second event of its kind this year. Joined by Watchet Youth Club members, the young councillors staged a series of activities from a car wash and cake stall to children's play and face painting. "The idea is to give the young people the chance to develop and learn new skills and to be enterprising," said Naomi Griffith, director of Minehead EYE, who has overseen the establishment of the youth council. "We had lovely weather for the first enterprise day held in March, which raised £100, but unfortunately it wasn't quite so good last Saturday." Despite the gloomy skies, the event raised around £40 and the youngsters - aged from 11 to 16 - are hoping to repeat the experience in December. Other events being considered include a fun run, while local youngsters are also hoping to improve their poster design skills. All the money raised will be ploughed back into future activities. "The day was a great success and the young people took far more responsibility for organising it than for the first event," said Naomi. Photos: Rebecca Overton
