SIR — No one can be unmoved by the death and destruction caused by the terrible earthquake which shook the Indian state of Gujarat.
The death toll is already estimated at over 20,000 and continues to rise alarmingly. Hundreds of thousands more people are affected by the earthquake, from injuries and loss of their homes, businesses, schools and hospitals.
The task of providing survivors with shelter, food, access to safe water and protection from disease is enormous and we are only just beginning to see the extent of this disaster.
UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, has already sent in relief items to help those who have survived the earthquake, including survival kits for displaced families, water purification tablets to provide clean drinking water, blankets and plastic sheeting to provide shelter for those who have lost their homes.

This means that safe water and sanitation systems will be absolutely essential to prevent unnecessary deaths — especially amongst children, who are more vulnerable to the spread of disease.
As well as working to help save lives and meet immediate basic needs, UNICEF is also planning for longer term needs such as re-opening classrooms and establishing child-friendly spaces to help children cope with the trauma of the disaster.
Just £35 will buy enough blankets to keep 50 people warm, while £50 could save the lives of 300 children suffering from cholera or dysentery by treating them with Oral Rehydration Salts.
Any donation will be gratefully received to help the children of Gujarat in what is a highly distressing and vulnerable time for them.
Please send your donations to UNICEF India Earthquake Appeal, UNICEF, Room IND, PO Box 150, Salisbury, Wilts SP3 4PL.
Thank you.
