Yeovil Hospital staff are celebrating after some notable achievements in The Dorset and Somerset NHS Modernisation Awards Scheme.

The scheme recognises extraordinary work by health and social care staff in the two counties.

The "Team Award for Innovation" went to the critical care outreach nurses based at Yeovil District Hospital.

This team provides expert critical care nursing at the bedsides of seriously ill patients, wherever they are located in the hospital.

They have the equipment and ability to start critical care in any ward while a bed in intensive care or the high dependency unit is prepared.

An "Unsung Heroes Award for NHS Support Staff" went to East Somerset Trust gardeners Adrian Goldring and Martin Ford for their grounds and gardens improvement project.

Together they ensure that the gardens and the entrance to Yeovil Hospital and Verrington, Crewkerne and South Petherton community hospitals - are attractive and appealing.

Highly Commended in the "Individual Award for Innovation" was Sue Williams, who runs the nurse-led Breast Reduction Assessment Clinic at Yeovil District Hospital.

Sue has 20 years experience as a specialist breast care nurse.

Also highly commended in the Partnership Award were the palliative care nurse recruitment collaborative between East Somerset NHS Trust and St Margaret's Somerset Hospice.

This was set up to recruit a number of nurses jointly employed by both organisations, who will work on a rotational basis at Yeovil District Hospital and St Margaret's new 16-bed in-patient unit and day care centre.

The team is made up of Karen Dows, Serge Mootoo and Imogen Watson from Yeovil District Hospital, and Ann Lee and Lesley Queen from St Margaret's.

Highly commended in the Health Improvement Award was East Somerset NHS Trust's clinical trials unit.

This team aims to improve the care of cancer patients by offering them the chance to take part in non-commercial research trials.

East Somerset NHS Trust chief executive James Scott said: "It was a great honour for our staff to be recognised in so many categories of these first ever awards."
