YEOVIL and district is missing out on lottery cash, according to MP David Laws.

Mr Laws this week released figures showing the extent to which the Yeovil constituency is lagging behind the rest of the country in terms of National Lottery awards.

After compiling information supplied by Camelot, the lottery operator, Mr Laws told The Clarion:"I was concerned to learn that Yeovil constituency seems to be receiving less than its fair share of lottery funding.

"Since the lottery has been running, our area has received £9.4 million. However, the average funding per constituency is £14.1 million.

"As our area only receives two thirds of the national average, I will be looking into this situation and trying to help as many organisations I can to win funding in the future."

Mr Laws is also concerned that the amount of grant aid available for good causes could be cut if government recommendations in the recent Gambling Review Report are implemented

He said: "Camelot has told me that if the new proposals were in place for the last seven years, our area would have lost £1.2 million of the £9.4 million we received.

"I am obviously taking this very seriously and will monitor the situation to help ensure that the National Lottery is working effectively to help as many local people as possible."
