SIR — Once again we are experiencing the aftermath of an illegal and irresponsible act of laziness and stupidity by (probably) the crew of one of the many ships which ply the Bristol Channel.
It appears that some form of toxic gelatinous chemical compound has been mindlessly dumped in the sea. It eventually lands up on our beaches to become an environmental hazard.
There appears to have been little or no reporting that this had occurred.
Now we have reports of animals going down with violent stomach pain and some have died as a result. This chemical has yet to be identified, which should help vets provide an appropriate antidote, if possible.
On the positive side, however, in Porlock it has been very impressive to see how the word has spread. Home-made notices have been displayed in the village, on gates and on stiles on the marsh. Dog walkers in general are exchanging information.
There is a real sense of community spirit in action showing through. Nice to know it still exists.
