BOOKS came piling off the shelves at Wiveliscombe Library last Friday, when 100 people checked out over 1,500 in the space of one and a half hours.

The mass book withdrawal was organised by Friends of Wiveliscombe Library to highlight its opposition to the library’s potential closure as part of sweeping changes across the county, by Somerset County Council.

Over 80 books were also withdrawn earlier in the day, and well over half of the total stock of 2,500 was taken out.

“It was a great response from all sorts of people, young and old,” a spokesman for the Friends said.

“We deliberately held it on Somerset Day, which celebrates what we value in Somerset – and people value their library!"
