People in Wiveliscombe of all ages are gearing up for a day of celebration with the 10 Parishes Street Market and Carnival on Sunday September 13.

It is especially welcome as last year’s event had to be cancelled due to high winds, torrential rain and yellow weather warnings.

“We are delighted to get it back this year, it is a real highlight for the whole community and the last shout of summer,” said organiser Pauline Homeshaw.

“There’s something about all being together in the town centre with the road closed off, the traders and music going all day, and the carnival, that creates a great atmosphere.”

From 10am – 5pm, almost the whole of West Street will be closed to traffic with around 50 stalls on site, including a huge range from local brewers and cider makers to farm kitchen foods; local artists and creatives to cake-makers and booksellers.

In the nearby Jubilee Gardens there will be non-stop music of all kinds from around 10 groups, including The Wivey Wind Band, jazz musicians, the Blues Band, a children’s band, Wivelele, and the Big Noise Street Street Band which will also lead the carnival procession through the town centre.

The carnival starts at 3pm and a host of children and adults will wend their way from Golden Hill through the centre and along West Street, with all kinds of outfits expected on the theme of trees.

“They could be anything connected with trees, from leaves to twigs to forests, and it seems particularly fitting to celebrate them at the moment when our trees are so stressed by the climate,” said Pauline. “The carnival is always great fun, a lovely spectacle that involves so many groups in the community.”

The whole event is non-profit making, purely a day of celebration for all ages.
