MINEHEAD lifeboat crew member Raji Webber is trained to make quick decisions. So when she found nearly £200 in banknotes blowing in the wind on Minehead Avenue she knew exactly what to do.

“I gathered up the money, counted it and went looking for a police officer,” Raji said.

“It could have been someone’s pension or wages and no-one can afford to lose that sort of money. I just did what most people would have done.”

Raji handed her find – totalling £185 – to PCSO Katherine Williams, who said: “Shortly afterwards, we were stopped by a member of the public who had lost that exact amount of cash while walking through the town after visiting a cashpoint. So the story had a really happy ending, thanks to Raji.”

One of the first women to qualify for the Minehead lifeboat crew, Raji runs her own business, Window Woman and Locksmith, a repair service for doors, windows and conservatories.

She told the Free Press: “I was driving along The Avenue in my van last Thursday when I saw what looked like a £20 note in the middle of the road. I stopped and there were crisp new notes all around me!

“I collected the money and drove around looking for a police officer. I found two PCSOs who later told me that someone had claimed the cash so I met him and handed it over.

“Apparently, if it hadn’t been claimed in four weeks I could have kept it, but I’m really glad it went to the rightful owner.”

PCSO Williams later tweeted: “Thank you so much, Raji. It’s fantastic that we have honest people like you living and working in our community.”
