AN Exmoor-based charity which provides adventure activities for people with disabilities has won a £50,000 windfall to help it extend its work.

The Calvert Trust Exmoor went head to head with a Plymouth charity for the Big Lottery People's Millions - a partnership between the Big Lottery and ITV.

And in a public phone vote the Calvert Trust came out on top.

A short film about the work of the charity's Uniting Families with Disabilities project was aired on Monday and voting closed at midnight the same day.

The charity plans to use the money to provide bursary funds to allow South West families with a disabled child to take a break at its centre, as well as improving water sports facilities to make then even more accessible.

"Winning the People's Millions is a great boost for families with a disabled child across the South West," said Calvert Trust Exmoor spokesman Robert Lott.

"It will allow us to help more of the 60,000 children with a disability in our region."

l The outcome of Timberscombe's Orchard Social Club bid for funding for a minibus, which was voted for on Wednesday, was still awaited as we went to press.
