AN online session is being held on Tuesday (June 3) for anybody wondering how to create a nature management plan for their local churchyard or burial ground.
The ‘Wilder Churches’ team from Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Diocese of Bath and Wells will explain how to increase the value of a churchyard or burial ground for nature during the 90-minute event from 7 pm to 8.30 pm.
‘Wilder Churches’ is a joint initiative that has been supporting communities to make space for nature in their local churchyard, other church land or burial ground since 2021.
The Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Rev Michael Beasley, recently called for churches across Somerset to become involved in the project.
A spokesperson said: “Anybody and everybody is welcome, whether this is the first time you have heard about ‘Wilder Churches’ or time has flown by and you would appreciate a refresh, we would love to have you.
“This session will provide advice on creating a simple practical management plan for your churchyard that outlines how the space is being cared for with nature in mind and why.
“We will discuss potential sources of funding, and other ways to manage financial costs that can arise from changing management or creating habitats as part of your plan.
“We will also share examples of management plans from other churchyards involved in the initiative.”
The event will include a question and answer session with the team, where people can ask about their issues and seek advice or share their own experience.
Places on the session are free and can be booked online.
