SIR — Dudley Seale (Your Letters June 28) nearly made me choke on my morning coffee until I realised that his suggestion that the former hospital should be pulled down and replaced by a car park must surely be a joke.

After all, who in their right mind would consider pulling down this beautiful old building, where many Minehead folk drew their first breath, and replacing it with a soulless stretch of tarmac?

Instead it is intended to become, thanks to the efforts of the Minehead Development Trust, a lively community hub with leisure facilities for those rainy days, a more spacious library, a town museum, with the full-length first-floor banqueting hall restored to its former glory for meetings, concerts etc etc.

If you want to reinvigorate our town centre, as we all do, then this is the way to do it, rather than destroy its iconic buildings.

Think again, Mr Seale, and make sure you send in your pledge form to support this imaginative scheme.

Minehead.
