SIR — Last Thursday I had to go through our village of Williton to visit the doctors' surgery, and as my appointment was before the refuse lorry had picked up the black bags we all put out each week, I could not help seeing just what some people were putting out for our council to collect.

I can still remember the uproar in the village when the council proposed building the new landfill site at Rydon Farm after the Treborough tip had been filled up.

We were led to believe the Rydon site would have some 15 years of tipping available. I am not an expert on calculating lorry loads of waste, but if we are not very careful the site will be full before much longer.

Should another 200 homes and an industrial site be built in the village, how much longer will Rydon tip be open? And how many more green fields will the council be after once it is filled?

Could I point out to everyone that there is a roadside collection of paper and cardboard every fortnight. Bottles and cans can be taken to one of the recycling banks, tin foil and old spectacles can be taken to our doctors' surgery for recycling, and the village hall committee is recycling postage stamps and empty printer cartridges to raise cash for the new village hall.
