Division One

Trull v Roadwater

ROADWATER pushed Trull further adrift at the foot of the table with an emphatic victory on Saturday.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Trull's university boys looked solid on a placid track.

Simon Aspey bowled steadily keeping a check on the run rate and eventually earned reward, bowling the useful looking Davey with the score on 30.

Stand-in keeper Lee Johnson-Smith then showed quick thinking with a stumping to dismiss Grubb and when Brewer trapped Bates in front Trull's best seemed to have gone.

Fewings however combined hard hitting with stubborn defence to negotiate the rest of the innings, finishing on 60 no, and with Newland contributing 32 Trull finished on 147-5.

Simon Aspey's 12 consecutive over cost just 25 runs and Toby Brewer found life in a dead track to finish with 2-33.

Roadwater's reply stuttered as both openers fell cheaply but this only brought Petri Cole and David Hill to the crease and they eventually eased their way past their target with 11 overs remaining.

Cole scored seven 4s in his second consecutive unbeaten half-century, and Hill bludgeoned two 6s in his blistering 67 no.

Trull: 147-5 (Fewings 60 no, Newland 23, S Aspey 2-25, T Brewer 2-33).

Roadwater: 148-2 (D Hill 67 no, P Cole 52 no).

Points: Trull 6 Roadwater 23.

Crowcombe v Timberscombe

WITH the result important to both sides for different reasons, it was home side Crowcombe who picked up the winning points when they played league leaders Timberscombe on August 9, giving themselves a chance of escaping relegation.

Crowcombe batted first and steadily lifted themselves to the reasonable total of 173 all out, with J Baker scoring the most for them with 35.

G Thorpe finished with the best of the visitor's figures with 4-40.

Timberscombe's P Sparks top scored for them with 49 when they replied and although they achieved maximum batting points they were nine runs short of victory and with one wicket remaining when their 40 overs ran out.

C Lewis finished with 3-50 for Crowcombe.

Crowcombe: 173 (J Baker 35, C Brewer 26, J Baker 23, G Thorpe 4-40, N Virgin 3-43).

Points: Crowcombe 25 Timberscombe 10.

Buckland St Mary v

Crowcombe

THIS 48 run victory by Crowcombe away to Buckland St Mary almost secures Crowcombe's place in the first division next season.

The visitors batted first and T Ash led the way for them scoring 61 in a final total of 173 all out, exactly the same score as the previous week's match against Timberscombe.

They had to work for their runs, K Reed (5-35) bowling tightly for Buckland.

Buckland struggled against the Crowcombe bowling attack, so much so that their top score was only 20.

When their last wicket fell they were still 48 runs short of Crowcombe's total on 125, with S Bailey the pick of the bowlers finishing with 4-47.

Crowcombe: 173 (T Ash 61, J Baker 29, C Lewis 19, K Reed 5-35, M Knight 2-54).

Buckland St Mary: 125 (R Maddock 20 no, R Hellier 20, S Bailey 4-47, C Brewer 2-15, C Lewis 2-51.

Points: Buckland St Mary 8 Crowcombe 26.

Timberscombe v Over Stowey

TOP met bottom on Saturday at Timberscombe with the result going to form.

Over Stowey elected to bat on a hot day and with a dry hard pitch a high scoring game looked likely.

Despite losing an early wicket Stowey made good progress with 41 runs off the first eight overs but as the ball got softer the pitch started to give very low bounce and so batting got very difficult.

Only Phil Rich (33) managed to score with his array of hard hit shots and eventually Stowey were dismissed for 117 with five overs remaining.

All Timberscombe's bowlers kept a steady line and length, with Freddie Hayes taking four wickets.

Timberscombe openers Luke Taylor and Paul Sparks put on 64 in 20 overs but then both were bowled in successive overs causing a slight wobble in the home side.

Stowey's bowlers and fielders stuck to their task and kept the run rate down but Trevor Howard kept his cool and guided the home side to victory with five overs to spare.

Over Stowey: 117 (P Rich 33, F Hayes 4-27, N Virgin 2-14).

Timberscombe: 118-4 (L Taylor 36, T Howard 26 no, P Sparks 24, C Sellick 2-11).

Points: Timberscombe 26 Over Stowey 5.

Brompton Ralph v Stogumber

THIS local derby at Brompton gave Stogumber the double on Saturday with victory by 26 runs.

Stogumber batted first and were made to work for their runs early on but with Stuart Thorne once again having a good knock of 64 and Jimmy Rexworthy and Simon Penny making contributions the run rate increased.

Wickets fell later on, mainly to C Welsh (4-32), but the visitors posted a useful 201-7 at the end of their 40 overs.

Brompton made a good start with T Gill (53) and P Poole (41) having a good partnership which looked to have put their side in the driving seat.

However Steven Hayes, Rexworthy and Brian Penny struck back for Stogumber with three wickets apiece and although D Gilbert and D Takle reached the twenties the inform Stogumber dismissed the home side for 175.

Stogumber: 201-7 (S Thorne 64, J Rexworthy 42, S Penny 36, C Welch 4-32, C Takle 2-50).

Points: Brompton Ralph 8 Stogumber 26.

Division Two

Cutcombe v Bridgetown

A VERY close encounter was the result of the game between Cutcombe and Bridgetown on Saturday.

Cutcombe batted first and although S Smith and B Bisgood got into the thirties few others got going.

T Gliddon and Bob Matravers found the wicket to their liking and took three wickets each.

Things were no easier for Bridgetown and with S Smith removing the first four batsmen and Phil Webber bowling his 12 overs for just 18 runs they had to dig deep.

Dave Hillier (37 no) and Bob Matravers did just that and the visitors won with three wickets in hand. A useful 25 in the middle of the innings by Paul Matravers kept the visitors in the game.

For Cutcombe Smith finished with the good figures of 4-23.

Cutcombe: 128-8 (S Smith 33, B Bisgood 37, T Gliddon 3-22, R Matravers 3-12).

Bridgetown: 129-7 (D Hillier 37 no, P Matravers 25, R Matravers 17, S Smith 4-23).

Points: Cutcombe 6 Bridgetown 24.

Division Three

Carhampton v Morebath

CHASING a total which includes one century in it is hard enough but when there are two it becomes difficult.

Carhampton found this out on Saturday when they played Morebath at home because although they gained maximum batting points they finished 108 runs short of the visitor's total.

Morebath won the toss and chose to bat and were rewarded with two fine innings from S Kelland (102) and M Hill (103), who put on over 200 runs for the second wicket.

Wickets fell in the chase for quick runs with Mark Symes and Chris Milton picking up seven between them, with Milton's at very little expense.

With 266 needed for victory, Carhampton always faced an uphill fight and with the loss of five wickets in nine overs it became almost impossible.

Chris Milton (82) held Carhampton's innings together supported by 13 year old Peter Baker who batted for 14 overs and last man Paul Hammond (25 no).

S Fisher was the pick of the Morebath bowlers finishing with 3-30 as Carhampton were dismissed for 157.

Morebath: 265-8 (M Hill 103, S Kelland 102, M Symes 4-29, C Milton 3-1).

Carhampton: 157 (CV Milton 82, P Hammond 25 no, S Fisher 3-30, B Boundy 2-11).

Points: Carhampton 9 Morebath 26.

Timberscombe II v Fitzhead II

TIMBERSCOMBE II moved off the bottom of Division 3 with an emphatic 89 victory away at Fitzhead II.

The visitors batted first and the loss of an early wicket brought Phil Hayes and Royston Ball together in what turned out to be the match winning partnership. Aided by some sloppy fielding —with over 10 chances spurned — these two compiled a mammoth 198 partnership before they were both dismissed by the young S Bellringer, Hayes for 88 and Ball for 98.

Captain Keith Storey then scored a quick 20 no to push the final total to 235-4, with S Bellringer claiming three wickets.

When Fitzhead replied, after Mark Bellringer was bowled by Chris Hill for a quickfire 20, Bill Townsend and Alan Summers put together a dangerous partnership before they were both caught and bowled by Dave Chilcott for 12 and 25 respectively.

Ben Robinson then ripped through the remaining batting turning 6-38 including bowling the hard hitting Lee Milton for 19.

It was left to Paul Bellringer to hit a sensible 38 no to steer Fitzhead to a respectable 146 all out, but still 89 runs short.

Timberscombe II: 235-4 (R Ball 98, P Hayes 88, K Storey 20 no, S Bellringer 3-43).

Fitzhead II: 146 (P Bellringer 38 no, A Summers 25, M Bellringer 20, L Milton 19, B Robinson 6-38, D Chilcott 3-49).

Points: Fitzhead II 6 Timberscombe 26.

Division Four

Stogumber II v Stoke St

Gregory

LEAGUE leaders Stoke St Gregory showed why they are top of the table when they came to Stogumber on Saturday, winning easily.

Stoke batted first and found the pitch and the Stogumber bowling much to their liking hitting a massive 273-5 in their 40 overs.

Good partnerships between Mike Willey and Neil Sollis and Sollis and Paul Morse lifted then to 214-4 off 34 over and with nearly 60 coming off the last 10 overs Stogumber knew they had a tough target to chase.

Nick Bennett bowled well to take his three wickets and Daniel Barnes woke up in time to take two but if chances offered had been held the score may have been less.

Stogumber's innings consisted of a top score of 19, extras reaching 16, one other batsman reaching double figures and very little else.

James Weetch was the top scorer, the bowling of A Harwood and S Willey proving far too good for the home batsmen.

Stoke St Gregory: 273-5 (P Morse no 82, N Sollis 72, M Willey, L Hembrow 18, N Bennett 3-57, D Barnes 2-81).

Stogumber: 78 (J Weetch 19, D Barnes 15, S Willey 5-33, A Harwood 4-36).

Points: Stogumber 3 Stoke St Gregory 26.

Brompton Ralph II v

Bishops Hull II

S RIDLER scored over half of Brompton's total on Saturday in their 85 run victory over Bishops Hull II.

Brompton batted first and with S Ridler (111) and A Gilbert (50) finding the bowling to their liking a big score was always on the cards.

Although there was little other support the final total of 216-7 looked a difficult total to chase.

E Welstead bowled steadily for Bishops Hull finishing with 3-69.

Bishops Hull were never in the chase and although I Tucker reached 44 and Boon 39 the run rate was such that at the end of their 40 overs they had only reached 131 for the loss of five wickets.

Brompton Ralph: 216-7 (S Ridler 111, A Gilbert 50, T Acock 24, E Welstead 3-69, I Tucker 2-49).

Bishops Hull II: 131-5 (I Tucker 44, Boon 39, C Keyte 16, W Martin 2-15).

Points: Brompton Ralph II 23 Bishops Hull 7.

Division Five

Brompton Ralph III v

Taunton Radiacs

A LOW score by Brompton Ralph III proved no problem to beat for Taunton Radiacs on Saturday at Brompton Ralph.

M Wright top scored for Brompton with 37 with with no other support they finished on 82-9, with N Hill claiming 5-23.

Taunton Radiacs' T Barber finished three short of a half century as the visitors passed the required total with the loss of only three wickets.

Brompton Ralph III: 82-9 (M Wright 37, N Hill 5-23, S Mason 2-5).

Taunton Radiacs: 84-3 (T Barber 47).
