SIR — I am writing in response to letters in the Free Press of January 27 and February 3 regarding dog mess.
It is very sad for me to read that there are still certain dog owners out there that feel it is acceptable for their dogs to defecate and not clear the mess up behind them on Dunster Beach.
As mentioned in one of your reader's letters, we do have an awful lot of dog bins that are located in the dog walking areas and also along the seafront along the permitted right of way footpath.
Unfortunately, when our staff tackle people that they have noted leaving their dog mess behind, on some occasions they have been met with very abusive comments.
It is also not abnormal for dog owners to drive onto the recreational area, let their dogs out of their car whilst they drive along and then collect their dogs up and drive off without clearing up after them.
We will be patrolling the area more stringently now and, just as a warning to the owners that walk their dogs on our site, please do pick up your mess after you, there are plenty of bins available and therefore no excuse for us to keep finding dog mess littered around the area.
Dunster Beach has prided itself on being a dog friendly site and it would be a real shame if, but for the thoughtlessness of a few people, this were to change in the future.
So, once again, please pick up your mess after you – this is a beautiful area for everyone to enjoy. Thank you.
