SIR — Re the supermarket plan for Williton, our village, and I mean our village, is living in the past.

I, like a lot of other folk, went to Williton School in Bridge Street and the village hasn't changed in over 60 years. We now live in 2013 – things have moved on to say the least.

Yes I see the problem of traffic and our local stores, but let's get brave and think ahead.

A new store with extra shops, parking and outlets would be advantageous.

First though, we have to look at the A roads between Bridgwater and Minehead, the A39 and the A358 from Taunton. As we all know these two roads meet in Williton.

Why don't we get our MP Mr Liddell-Granger to have a long chat with the Transport Minister to come up with a plan for a bypass for Williton, Washford, Billbrook and Carhampton with help from EDF?

You only have to drive to Minehead to see the traffic that has to stop for lorries or local buses to pass in any of the villages or hamlets I have mentioned; even cars balanced on the hedgerows after overtaking in places they should not!

Maybe our new chief constable Nick Gargan would like to have a day or two travelling both the A39 and A358 and to walk through Williton, Washford and others to see the devastation the lorries cause. Even walking along the pavement in Long Street is hazardous to all – that's even without the speeding traffic.

If we were to have a bypass, then our overdue roundabout at Washford Cross and the pelican crossing in Long Street would not be required as the traffic would prefer to use the said bypass.

This would save money for our local council and perhaps some of the money could then go towards a new village hall.

With the traffic at a premium, we could have a new supermarket and car park and then how wonderful to stroll our lovely village with ease!
