SIR — Whilst I was pleased to see your many correspondents holding off condemnation of Butlin's, the departure was somewhat depressing between the "deserving better" and the "farmland being bought up" (August 3).
Both correspondents, one nameless, paint different pictures based on futile predictions and exaggerated claims. The end of the world, as we know it, could well be nigh, as it seems to have been for generations, but this predicted demise of standards is in the hands of us all.
We do have a certain amount of power over those serving us, if only we choose to exercise it, instead we fall in line, like weak-willed sheep. The choice of politicians, I admit, is a tricky one, as most seem to exude similar, if very few, qualities whatever colour they choose to take to be voted in.
However, as for milk, we are the deciding factor on how well the farming community is dealt with at the hands of the supermarkets. For with the ordinary person there comes purchasing power; never before have we had this power, for it is the supermarket era that has allowed us a choice and thereby is a power.
Therefore, why do we choose not to use it to benefit the farming community in this time of unfairness? Great power for milk selection but little for selecting politicians, which is why milk-producers rely on us to do the right thing rather than the politicians!
Surely, we do deserve better than our farmland being sanitised or commercialised, so start making a stand in case this scenario is coming to fruition.
