A SPECTACULAR 15-minute firework display over Watchet Harbour which drew hundreds of visitors to the town was the finale of a day of spooky Halloween celebrations on Saturday night (October 31).

Such was the day’s success that it is already being considered as a possible annual event.

Residents decorated their houses with eerily-lit ghosts and spider webs and the streets were thronged with scary Halloween characters, trick or treaters, face-painting, and entertainment ranging from music to creative crafts, with a hog roast provided by Somerset Farmhouse.

The event, hailed online as ‘absolutely magical’ and ‘a truly amazing night’, was organised by the Watchet Summertime committee which had postponed the firework display from August because of fire risks caused by prolonged dry weather at that time.

A spokesperson said: “Halloween seemed the ideal time for a firework display and it could not have been more successful.

“It was a brilliant display but we should all be aware that there is a real risk of Summerttime not taking place next year due to falling numbers on the organising committee.

“It is time for some new volunteers to come forward.”

Promising ‘plenty of spooky fun’, the day started with an autumn market organised by Watchet Town Council followed by music from DJ Paul Stevens and local band Patchwork.

There was also a Halloween costume competition and a range of attractions for youngsters including Halloween face painting on the Esplanade by professional artist Becky Shaw, of Wistaway.

Among those who enjoyed their new looks were youngsters Angheluta Mihai and Noah Allen.

Many visitors said they hoped the event would become a regular part of the Watchet calendar.

One said: “The fireworks were amazing.

“It was a lovely evening.”

Another said: “Thank you, Watchet. You have done it yet again.”
