SIR — I found your report "Council to look at Watchet Star project" (Free Press January 26) most interesting and sincerely hope this is not a "going through the motion exercise" by the district council.

It is difficult to evaluate how many tourists it would bring to the town but at least it could be another iron in the fire, so to speak.

It would be nice to think that various factions in Watchet and Minehead could cease bickering and join together, liaise with the West Somerset Railway and visiting passenger steamers (especially if a new pier can be built at Minehead) and have a steam train from Minehead to Watchet with ample time for shopping, looking at the Watchet Marina and hopefully The Watchet Star.

And what about a steam museum built on Harbour Road where cars now park.

Such a programme would enhance both seaside resorts, bearing in mind Watchet is the only town where the station is adjacent to a harbour.

Finally, as children living at Alcombe we were often turned back at Quay Street by men in blue jerseys, saying "we don't want your sort down here".

I hope times have changed or we shall never get a new pier and a chance to rejuvenate tourism would be lost.
