WATCHET are still looking for their first win of the season after drawing a blank at Robinsons on Saturday in an uninspiring goalless draw.
A hot afternoon and hard, bumpy pitch contributed to a drab affair in which Watchet always looked the more likely winners, but their inability to create clear openings prevented them from pressing home their advantage despite hitting the woodwork three times.
The visitors enjoyed the greater share of possession in the first half, looking solid in defence and winning the midfield tussles without finding any penetration in the final third.
Lawrence Monaghan and Andrew Woodward replaced the unavailable Richie Rich and Gary Trunks with Matt Cox returning to add bite and industry to the line-up.
Watchet had an early chance when a throw from John Harris caught the home defence by surprise as it arrowed into the six yard box, but Robbie Hopkins was unable to keep his leaping header down.
A clever dummy from Steve Wild after Cox's strong run gave Robbie Allen the chance to send a fierce drive from the edge of the area flashing just wide of the target.
Allen went even closer soon afterwards when a low corner from Wild reached him on the 18 yard line and this time he hit a firm shot with his right foot which clipped the top of the bar.
Watchet then went quiet for a spell despite Monaghan's prompting and cajoling, and Woodward had to be quick to make a recovery tackle.
Robinsons were close to a goal when Steve Moore pushed a curling free kick against his post and was relieved to be first to the rebound.
Watchet were not able to increase the tempo in the second half as their game never really got going.
Apart from dealing with set pieces, neither keeper was serious extended from direct attempts on goal.
Hopkins continued to have little luck in front of the target, shooting against the outside of an upright from a tight angle, clipping a cross-cum-shot onto the top of the framework and then sending a looping header from Allen's corner inches over.
Stuart Cowling came on to threaten with some swift interpassing, and clever play from Monaghan on the right led to him drilling the ball across the face of the goal with only the finishing touch lacking.
Wayne Merrick replaced the injured Dave Spence, which meant a reshuffle, as the visitors continued to struggle for the breakthrough.
Their last real chance went when Hopkins and Mike Jones left the ball for each other in a goalmouth scramble for a defender intervened.
Watchet were still striving for the win late in the day as Ben Saddington was sent on as an extra striker, but there was an increasing danger that the home side might sneak all three points.
Following a free kick Mark Clausen had to make a crucial block after a home forward had got in on the blind side, and with very little time added on for stoppages it ended in a stalemate.
Watchet: S Moore, D Spence, M Clausen, A Woodward, L Monaghan, M Jones, M Cox, R Allen, J Harris, R Hopkins, S Wild, subs S Cowling, W Merrick, B Saddington.
l Watchet's first home game of the season tomorrow sees them entertain Sporting Club Somerton (ko 3 p.m.) with Richie Rich and Gary Trunks added to their squad.
