WATCHET celebrated its version of a royal flush when it chose its carnival queen for the 2012 procession.

The event last Saturday, staged by Watchet Live, saw a higher number of entrants than last year competing for the top title.

And 16-year-old Amy Duffield took the honours, with 13-year-old Zoe Pope chosen as her attendant.

And picked out of the hat to take on the role of princes were Nathan Hunter and Owen Porter, with Catrin Robinson and Caitlyn Sweeney as princesses.

Event organiser Julie Prescott said the judges had a hard task as the competition was very close.

Carnival queen entrants had to undergo a short interview in front of the audience at the town's Royal British Legion club, before joining the judges for an informal chat.

"We were extremely pleased with the turnout," said Mrs Prescott.

"All the contestants were fantastic and it was a very close result between the eventual winners.

"It was lovely to see all the children supported by their families."

Mrs Prescott said Watchet Live wanted to thank the legion for hosting the event, local businesses who had supported it, as well as the judges and everyone else who had helped.

This year's carnival parade will take place on July 29.
