ANYONE using Watchet harbour should wear a lifejacket at all times because of the increasing danger from mud, boat owners were warned this week.

Watchet Boat Owners’ Association (WBOA) plans to highlight the current hazards at forthcoming meetings of the town’s harbour board and harbour advisory committee, hoping that a solution can be found.

The marina has suffered from serious siltation problems since it opened in 2001, partly due to its geographic location and design.

Studies have shown that up to ten tons of mud can be left in the harbour by every tide.

“We are concerned that people, particularly children, using the Market Street slipway in the outer harbour may not be aware of how deep the mud is at the end of the slipway and what a potential hazard it can be," said WBOA treasurer Martin Stevens.

“A working group is currently making good progress on what could be long-term answers to the age-old problem of mud in Watchet harbour,” said WBOA treasurer Martin Stevens.

“But in the meantime we have major concerns about mud levels in the marina and the outer harbour from a personal safety perspective and we have responsibilities to members, berth-holders and the general public."
