The SECOND annual ‘80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge Walk’ proved a resounding success, with 23 enthusiastic walkers covering a collective 500 miles along Somerset’s stunning coastline.

The route along the South West Coast Path and King Charles III England Coast Path showcased the area’s diverse landscapes, from moorlands and farmland to sweeping beaches and estuaries.

The challenge was organised by the Somerset Trail Partnership in collaboration with Exmoor National Park Authority and it also met its fund-raising goal of £700 for The Outdoor Guide Foundation’s Waterproofs and Wellies Campaign.

Trail partnership spokeswoman Isobel Pring said: “Completing this walk in the timescale is not easy.

“The first two days are packed with steep climbs, and the final ascent up the steps to the top of Brean Down demands a last burst of energy.

“This stretch of coast is a joy to walk.

“It offers everything from gentle, flat paths to the dramatic hills and combes of Exmoor.

“We were lucky to have a fantastic group of walkers and great weather this year.

“Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we will be able to provide two sets of waterproofs and wellies, 10 pairs each, for two coastal primary schools in Somerset.”

The walk began in sunshine from Exmoor’s County Gate, near the Devon border, and concluded eight days later in Brean Down.

Next year will see the 10th anniversary of the opening of the King Charles III England Coast Path between Minehead and Brean Down, and the trail partnership aims to hold the ‘80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge Walk’ for a third time.

Plans are also underway to introduce a series of circular walks throughout the year, and the partnership is actively seeking coastal partners to help host and sponsor the events.
