A DROP-in session is being held for Watchet and Williton residents to learn more about a £1.2 million scheme to upgrade the gas network for the two communities.

It will be in Williton Pavilion between 9.30 am and 5 pm on Monday (September 21) ahead of a start on the next phase of the project.

People will be able to hear details of progress made by Wales and West Utilities (WWU), learn about the next phase, view plans, and ask questions of the project team.

A spokesperson said: “The work is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area, helping to keep people warm for decades to come.”

An intensive programme of mains replacement works will see about four miles of gas pipes upgraded across the area during the next year to ensure a safe and reliable supply for about 700 customers for decades to come.

The spokesperson said WWU would continue to work closely with Somerset Council to carefully plan all projects and manage any necessary traffic measures.

An earlier drop-in session was held in Watchet, in May.

Project manager Roxanne Whittaker said: “We would like to see members of the local community at our drop-in event so we can share plans for the work.

“We know working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community.

“Whether it is heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”

In Watchet, Brendon Road will be shut from October 5 while the work progresses and the town council has secured a shuttle bus service to run during the closure.

The First Bus service will help maintain connections between Watchet, Doniford, and Williton, linking with the 28, 28A, and 15 buses.

Passengers will also be able to alight at St Decuman’s Church and use the pathway into town.

Normal bus stops will continue be served in both directions in Williton while Brendon Road is closed.

Across Somerset as a whole, Wales and West Utilities is investing more than £8.4 million in the next two years to upgrade gas pipes.

WWU programme manager Simon Lee said: “By completing this work now, barring any emergency repairs, we can avoid returning to the area and causing further disruption to the local community for decades.”
