AN invaluable service for the elderly and vulnerable in West Somerset could be at risk of closure, due to a lack of volunteer drivers.
Magna Housing offers a daily community meals service within a ten-mile radius of Watchet.
But more drivers are needed to deliver the meals between 11.45am and 1.30pm so that they can continue to be served on a daily basis, including weekends and bank holidays.
Kim Roberts, senior community services officer at Magna, said: “We provide a very valuable service to the rural community where we are based.
“However, we have become increasingly short of volunteers and are struggling to carry out the service in West Somerset. Sometimes our volunteers are the only people residents see during the day so we really don’t want to see the service go.”
Kim added: “Volunteers can do as much or as little as they want. They could be retired, or a young person perhaps looking for work experience and something to put on their CV, or maybe a mum who would like to get out and about in between the school run.
“We’re looking for anyone who could give up one or two lunchtimes a week, up to a maximum of two hours a day.
Volunteers need their own transport and will be paid mileage of 45p a mile.
Anyone willing to volunteer or wanting to find out more can contact Kim or the team at Magna Housing on 01984 635141.
