In response to last week’s letter by John Trueman from Carhampton concerning the rubbish discarded in Withycombe Lane, I too have witnessed it and been appalled by the thoughtlessness of some people.

However, I take issue with his suggestion that it is “most likely a single motorist on his/her way home to Withycombe”. I think it is highly unlikely to be any resident of Withycombe.

I live in the village and walk the lanes and footpaths daily. I see empty cans, bottles, cardboard cups, take away boxes etc throughout the village, up Rodhuish Lane and even along Oak Lane which is a no through road.

I pick them up, as do many other dog walking residents. As a village, we organise litter picking up groups to deal with the problem.

Withycombe is a through road to Rodhuish and beyond. I suggest it could be the same thoughtless young drivers who speed through the village for whatever purpose.

I support Mr Trueman in his request that whoever the culprits are, they desist!

H Hughes, Withycombe.
