The whole of Somerset and beyond has come together as one in mourning the loss of former Staplegrove and Bishops Hull CC cricketer Barnaby Webber who sadly lost his life, along with two others in an incident that took place in Nottingham last week.
The talented and popular 19-year-old’s untimely death has caused horror and disbelief.
There have been a number of vigils, including one at Bishops Hull Cricket Club where many of his friends and team mates gathered to pay their respects and lay floral tributes.
Barnaby’s parents were present at the vigil after which his mother Emma said: “We wanted to say a huge heartfelt thank-you to Bishops Hull Cricket Club for everything you have done. This is his home town, this is his home cricket club.
“We have had enormous support from all the people in Nottingham and it has been hugely appreciated, but these are his faces, these are his people and we just needed to come and pay our tributes to the place where his cricket club have put his tribute.”
On Friday evening before the start of the Somerset’s Vitality Blast match against Surrey the players from both sides wearing black arm bands, assembled in front of the Andy Caddick Pavilion and along with the crowd of over 7,500 took part in a minute’s applause in his memory. And Somerset CCC’s flag at the Cooper Associates County Ground has been flow at half mast.
On Saturday many local cricket matches across the county and beyond observed either a minute’s silence or applause in memory of one of their own, who during his short career had probably played against many of them, particularly in the West Somerset League where he was part of the Bishops Hull side that won the Division One title in 2022.
This Saturday, Bishops Hull CC will be hosting a Memorial Game starting at 1.30pm between two sides captained by Barnaby’s friends, where a barbecue and refreshments will be available and all funds raised will go towards providing a lasting memory to a young man who was taken far too soon.
On Sunday Somerset host Nottinghamshire in a four day championship match and before the start of play the players will take part in a minute’s applause in Barnaby’s memory and the Somerset CCC flag will be flown at half mast.
