SIR — Regarding the on-going problems over the winter closure of local toilets, I am guessing that the saving is that of cleaning costs, and that by closing several units it is possible to lay off staff during the winter.

These toilet facilities often include at least three or four water closets, some urinals, and at least two hand basins between them, with all the floor space for those faciities.

With this in mind, could I suggest the authorities contemplate, if and when capital funds permit, the modification of these toilet buildings to provide a single unisex facility at each site which would remain open during the winter when most of our visitors have gone away.

Having one self-contained unit (WC and basin) at each site, with the larger facility locked up until the visitors return, would reduce cleaning costs dramatically yet allow all-year-round provision.

Incorporation of facilities for the disabled could be considered at the same time.
