LOCAL fire brigades union leaders this week called for the threat to close Porlock fire station to be withdrawn with immediate effect.

They claimed that evidence presented so far was not strong enough to close the station which was last year chosen as ‘team of the year’ by Devon and Somerset’s chief fire officer.

FRSA spokesman Ben Redwood told the Free Press: “This summer Porlock have demonstrated their worth, with incidents such as fires at Butlin’s in Minehead and Williton. They have provided essential fire cover and helped keep people safe.

“Over the last five years, despite low crew levels, they have provided exceptional availability. They have trialled new equipment and ways of working and demonstrated the kind of ‘can do attitude’ that should be celebrated and not put at risk.”

Mr Redwood added: “They are ‘wildfire experts’ and have specialist equipment for dealing with these incidents. Wildfire is recognised within the fire service as a significantly increasing risk due to changes in weather patterns.

“Other climate conditions such as snow and flood mean the service needs to maintain and strengthen resources in towns such as Porlock.”
