WATCHET notched up two impressive wins at the weekend to give themselves a chance of escaping relegation from Division Two.

On Saturday they travelled to Leigh on Mendip and were asked to bat for the sixth successive time but they managed to build a large total, passing the 200 mark for the first time this season.

Father and son Dave and Philip Milton got them off to a flying start with 26 runs coming from the first four overs before Philip was bowled by the impressive Lambert.

Leigh carried on with an attacking field, with three slips and two gullies, to which Dave Milton and Martin Strong took a liking, smashing 70 run off nine overs before Milton was bowled for 40.

When Strong was out for 58 in the 30th over Watchet had a firm grip on the game at 143-4.

Leigh then took wickets at regular intervals as the batsmen tried to up the run rate, John Harris the most successful with 31 as the innings closed on 205-8, with Jason String (2no) getting his first taste of batting for the first team.

Leigh replied in positive manner with 40 coming off ten overs before Dave Milton took a fine catch to give Matt Lovell the first of his five wickets.

Both Lambert and Reakes looked in fine form and pushed the run rate along steadily before Andy Pyne took a marvellous catch near the boundary to dismiss Reakes for 34.

Australian Rhodes and Lambert took the score to 180-5 with six overs remaining, but a stunning runout by Andrew Woodward dismissed Rhodes for 32 and an over later Pyne caught the hard-hitting Lambert for 55.

Watchet were now on top and with Lovell bowling with great belief he took two wickets in two balls to finish with five wickets for the first time this season.

That left the last wicket to be taken by Liam Woolgrove with the first ball of the next over, securing a 15-run win.

Watchet: 205-8 (M Strong 58, D Milton 40, J Harris 31, A Lambert 3-49).

Leigh on Mendip: 190 (A Lambert 55, T Reakes 34, D Rhodes 32, M Lovell 5-53).

Points: Leigh on Mendip 9 Watchet 25.

l Watchet welcomed back Clive Strong for Sunday's match at home to Peasedown St John and he smashed an unbeaten 132 to set up a 90-run win.

Watchet were put in yet again but on a perfect wicket they amassed 253-4 - their largest total at home for three seasons.

Clive Strong's onslaught brought him his highest league score for Watchet and included 13 fours and five sixes.

He was partnered by his brother Martin and they put on 154 in just 15 overs before Martin was caught for 56, his second half-century of the weekend.

In reply, Peasedown always looked to chase the Watchet total and Mike Denning (41) and Mark Ford (70) posed the greatest threat.

But the experienced Martin Strong removed both and then took two more wickets in a tidy spell of 4-18 from seven overs.

Watchet's fielding wasn't as good as the day before but Woodward and Criddle both took important catches and Philip Milton was again impressive behind the stumps, taking a vital catch at the end of the innings.

When Watchet were in need of a matchwinner from their bowling ranks they found him again in the aggressive Matt Lovell, who for the second day running took five wickets and again just missed out on a hat-trick.

Their 90 run win gave Watchet maximum points from the weekend to give them some hope of avoiding the drop.
