SIR — I wondered if two minutes' silence should have been observed after Watchet's carnival weekend. After all, we are going to lose for ever the accommodation of the East Quay.

In the short time it has been available, there have been fetes, concerts, parades and a carnival, and this facility could have been developed and enhanced.

Instead, we have sold out to the builders, whose first and last interest is profit rather than the regeneration of Watchet.

For a marina that might accommodate 200 sailors, some of whom may, just may, venture out into the channel, a facility is being removed that could serve the whole of the town, in order to provide a few with their hobby — a rather selfish act that might not be forgiven.

We have thousands of village greens in this country which are left intact for the use of their communities.

I believe the East Quay could have become Watchet's 'village green', one with a sea view. Now that would have been unique. Alas it isn't to be so. Shame on us!
