MINEHEAD Museum is still optimistic about finding new, larger premises despite its recent disappointment of losing what was thought to be an ideal site in the town.
Trustees chairman Julian Luke said: "We have had a very successful stewards and friends’ meeting, following the withdrawal from the planned purchase of the site in The Avenue.
“There were plenty of positive suggestions which is really heartening after a significant setback for our many supporters.
“This was followed by an open evening when visitors had a chance to view the exhibits and discuss how the museum moves forward.
“While we are no nearer to securing the much-needed larger long-term home for the museum at the moment, the collection continues to attract a range of interesting new exhibits, while space for large class or group visits remains an issue.
“We are grateful for the longstanding support of the YMCA Beach Hotel that has ensured the museum has continued to grow and we hope that we can develop this into a larger more permanent home for the collection.”
It was donated by Helen Humphrey and will be on display next year.
Other recent additions are a large Haywards flagon, which has gone on display, and a 1790s long case clock and a Minehead mariner’s 1817 telescope which will be added next year.
The museum is now open five days a week but closed on Mondays and Fridays, which are available for pre-booked class or group visits.
