A TRIO of youngsters from the Exmoor Coast Federation of schools have won a national competition organised by computer giant Microsoft. Calling themselves 'Gryphon Games', Guy Milton-Jenkins, Doris Davis and Emilia Percival were crowned the 2014 Primary Kodu Cup champions. Guy from Minehead Middle School, Doris from St Dubricius' First School in Porlock and Emilia from Minehead First School won a competition to design, build and present their own video game. The finals were held at Microsoft UK's HQ in Reading last week and involved 12 teams and three hours of presentations to the judges, who included a Microsoft director Siobhan Morgan, head of ICT at Minehead Middle School, who supported the children through the competition, said: "All three children did an absolutely fantastic job and really wowed the judges and audience with their maturity, presentation and their confidence, particularly as Emilia and Doris were the youngest there. "The primary category is known to be the hardest to win and we are all incredibly proud of them." The Kodu Cup was launched two years ago in the UK and is open to children aged between seven and 14. It was introduced by Microsoft to help bring computer programming back into the classroom and uses their Kodu Game Creation software. The Exmoor Coast Federation has entered a team in each of the two competitions to date and reached the finals last year as well. The event helps pupils from the different schools to work together as part of transition activities between the first schools and the middle school. A Microsoft spokesman said: "The quality of the games produced and the attention to detail of all the teams was incredible. "These young people are a credit to themselves and their schools."
