SIR — Thank goodness for David Pitts' informed analysis of the self-evident fact that West Somerset cannot and should not try to support more than one 11-16 school (Your Letters February 7).

As a parent of two past pupils of the three-tier system and a former teacher in it over 16 years, I view with real trepidation the grim possibility that two of my grandchildren may have to suffer the deprivation of a grossly under-funded secondary education because of misguided decisions now based on an illusion of parental choice and a lack of appreciation (noted with splendid cogency in Clare Kellett's letter) of the commendably broad curriculum offered by West Somerset College.
