SIR — Although I do not recognise that Minehead has a parking problem, to have any taxi rank at all in the trading centre of the town is unnecessary in this day and age of instant communications.

The Parade and upper parts of The Avenue are not only the focus of retail business but also that of social activity. The town centre is primarily for people, not cars.

The taxi rank(s) should be moved to the transport hub of the town, the station, or near it, from where cabs can be called forward via mobile phone.

There, they would not block the thoroughfare, sea air would help blow away polluion from their ever-idling engines and cigarettes, and drivers would not compromise safety by standing in the street and making dangerous u-turns.

No brainer, as they say! The council should act immediately.

Carl Saunders-Singer,

Ballfield Road,

Minehead.
