BIG hearted tourism businesses in West Somerset and Exmoor are offering a helping hand to flood stricken families on the Somerset Levels.
People coping with the devastation wreaked by the some of the wettest weather on record are being given the chance of a free two-day holiday.
The idea came from B&B owner John Stenner, who runs Rose Bank Guest House in Porlock.
He contacted the village's visitor information centre and manager Denise Sage and her staff sprung into action to encourage more providers to sign up to the initiative.
And when the Exmoor Tourist Association got on board, the response from businesses soared.
"To start with we had a tremendous response from businesses in and around Porlock," said Mrs Sage.
"But there are now more than 50 businesses from across Exmoor and West Somerset."
And it isn't just accommodation providers who are digging deep to provide a little cheer.
"We have offers of free travel thanks to the West Somerset Railway, free meals at restaurants, visits to Dunster Castle and even an all-day photography safari courtesy of Exmoor Photography," said Mrs Sage.
"Everyone is offering what they can - we are delighted with the response."
Although the worst of the flooding is over, many homeowners and businesses still face months of disruption as they try to get their lives and livelihoods back on track.
Mr Stenner, who will host the first family to take advantage of the scheme, said he had wanted to do something to help the flood victims.
"I was moved by the footage of people on the Somerset Levels that was on our TV screens night after night and so thankful that here in West Somerset we have been almost unaffected by the floods," he said.
The Flooding on the Levels Action Group - FLAG - has been given the task of recommending families from the area who could benefit.
But organisers, who have been in regular contact with FLAG leaders, have been told that it is just what people affected by flooding need.
Mrs Sage said: "These people are currently trying to sort out the devastation in their homes and businesses but the idea of a short break in the near future will give them something to look forward to."
Tourism businesses wanting to get involved should contact Mrs Sage on 01643 863150.
