SIR — It is a wonderful thing to live in a democracy. It means we all have a voice.   Here in Dunster, we have been listening to the collective voice of West Street residents who awoke one morning in January to discover their street and much loved cobbles being ripped up. Those voices have served as a vital reminder to us all about the value and importance of meaningful consultation, and their fervour has demonstrated the strength of a united voice. The council has heard Dunster Conservation Group's impassioned cries. It has acknowledged it was mistaken not to have consulted residents on the paving in West Street. And it is trying to put that right. It has asked us which paving we prefer, that of the High Street or West Street. Really? Isn't it now time to step back and see the larger picture and to ask a bigger question, the one that values tax payers' money, the one that affects the community of and beyond this medieval village? Do the residents of Dunster really want to see £50,000 of public money spent on ripping up the new paving in West Street? Assuming there are no health and safety issues with the stone paving, I for one would much rather see the £50,000 spent on providing more resources for local children and families, or on more services helping to support the frail and vulnerable within our community.
