DESPITE the vagaries of a heatwave season this year, the Exmoor village of Timberscombe managed to present a delightful and credible annual show, with enthusiastic exhibitors displaying their talents in all areas, writes Pauline Bennett.

Contributions to the art section had increased with newcomers welcomed, plus a young resident of the village pitting her talents against the adults.

This section produced the ‘Best in Show’ with Trish Wright’s watercolour painting.

Runner-up ‘Best in Show’ went to handcrafter Joyce Smith for her knitted blanket for the charity Sands, which provides support for anybody affected by the death of a baby.

In the vegetable and fruit section, the high standard previously shown was upheld by Andy Heard’s remarkable contributions, gaining him the Joyce and Eddy Smith Cup.

Robert Lamacraft’s entries to other sections gained most points overall.

The ‘People’s Choice’ was won by Sandra Rae for her cross-stitch portrait of Princess Elizabeth - the Tudor one.

Timberscombe School and Pre-School provided a good contribution, including years three and four’s colourful selection of flower art, having studied American painter Georgia O’Keefe.

In the afternoon, the show welcomed many more visitors than last year, and the atmosphere was convivial.

The raffle was sponsored by Minehead Garden Centre and villagers to whom thanks were extended.

The auction, conducted by Ken Powls, was lively and entertaining. raising much needed funds for the village hall.

Thanks were expressed to the exhibitors, visitors, supporters, the Lion Inn, sponsors, organisers, willing hands, the auctioneer, and, importantly, to the show judges who give up their valuable time to ensure village shows continue to thrive.

Timberscombe Show does not expect ‘perfection’, it encourages all abilities and ages to ‘have a go’ to help keep up the tradition of local shows.
