WORK is expected to be completed by the end of the week on the replacement of three past their ‘use by’ date bus shelters in Minehead.

The £17,500 project is initially being funded by the town council before Somerset Council refunds the cost from a Government grant it received for bus service improvements.

New shelters are being installed in Bircham Road, opposite Brook Street, on the Bancks Street junction with The Parade, and outside The Avenue cinema.

Work on the first site, in The Avenue, began on Armistice Day (November 11).

Minehead Mayor Cllr Craig Palmer said he was delighted the bus shelter project was finally moving from planning to action.

Cllr Palmer said the project had been a priority for some time, and the town council had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep it on track, from sourcing quotes to maintaining regular dialogue with the unitary authority.

He said: “We have been determined to ensure Minehead gets the improved facilities our community deserves.

“We know how important these shelters are for residents and visitors alike.

“It has been a long process, but today marks a significant step forward.

“We are proud to have played a key role in driving this project and look forward to seeing the benefits for our community.

“While the journey has not been without its frustrations and delays, we are pleased to see tangible progress at last.

“Once complete, these shelters will provide much-needed comfort and protection for passengers, representing a significant improvement to local transport infrastructure.

“Minehead Town Council remains committed to championing projects that enhance our town and improve everyday life for residents.”

Cllrs Andy Hadley and Mandy Chilcott, who represent Minehead on Somerset Council, praised the town councillors for resolving the long-standing issue of the replacement bus shelters.
