WATCHET coastguard was scrambled on Sunday afternoon after three children got stuck in mud off Stolford Beach - just a matter of miles from where another youngster died in similar circumstances six weeks ago.

The children, who were aged between eight and 12, had been walking out towards the sea with an adult when the sand turned to mud and they began sinking.

Coastguards were alerted by the children's mother just before 5pm and Burnham lifeboat was launched.

A rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor on exercise in Wales was also diverted to the scene and soon reached the stranded children, who were around a mile-and-a-half from the shore.

A winchman pulled the children to safety, although, by then, the youngest was suffering from hypothermia.

They were taken to Bristol Children's Hospital and later discharged, none the worse for their ordeal.

Their adult companion managed to free himself and made his own way back to the beach.

The children were on holiday from the Republic of Ireland and were said to be unaware of the dangers posed by the notorious mudflats in Bridgwater Bay.
