WEST Somerset District Council contracts and community services manager Chris Tipple is due next week to face disciplinary procedures over allegations of gross misconduct.

Mr Tipple was suspended from his job last Thursday when fresh and more serious claims emerged after an investigation which started 14 weeks ago.

He had continued to work throughout the inquiry, which was being conducted by chief executive Colin Rockall.

Council strategic policy officer Alistair Stewart said this week: "I am not in a position to give any detail relating to the reasons for his suspension.

"Suspension would not have been considered if the allegations made could not, if proven, be likely to be viewed as gross misconduct."

Mr Stewart said the authority would follow its internal procedure for dealing with disciplinary matters.

Further information would be made available once the process was completed.

Mr Tipple was the sixth council officer in 12 months to be investigated and the third to be suspended after serious allegations were levelled at them.

Previously, home improvements grants officer Colin Morley was sacked after five months under suspension when a disciplinary panel of councillors found him guilty of gross misconduct.

Deputy chief executive Alan Beynon was suspended for seven months before his post was made redundant and it was decided not to take further action against him. He then took early retirement.

Mr Rockall, personnel officer Mandy Wishart, and building control officer Phil Gannon were also investigated but found not to have a case to answer.
