SIR – I would like to add a comment to Mr Bull's letter and in particular his question "How are more people and concrete going to improve life in Britain".
We have to face the reality of an increasing world population. Where are all the extra people going to live and to be housed?
Our government certainly does not want to frighten us with something approaching a true figure for our current population.
At the end of the 1940s I believe it was about 48 million, today with no knowledge of just how many people have slipped in, probably approaching 70 million.

Appeal for orchard volunteers after 'astonishing' numbers attend Carhampton wassailJapan, which has less land than we do for its population, has about 125 million.
So I guess by the time we take into consideration all the extra people who now want to settle here perhaps something over 100 million is not unreasonable.
Besides, unlike countries like Sweden which seem to be able to produce their own high tech fighter aircraft as well as quality engineering products with a population of less than London, we are told we need all these extra millions to support an increasing ageing population!
Let's face it, if we have an indoor bath and toilet and a pension after working until 70, we are fortunate indeed.
Quality of life, what's that? And who's promising it? I would really like to know.
I suppose we must have faith that the Bank of England knows what it is doing by pumping electronic billions into, well I'm not really sure where it ends up, does anybody? And perhaps the 'Great' can be put back into Great Britain.
