SIR — Nearly every week we read of yet another motor 'accident' on our roads in West Somerset. What has gone wrong with our drivers? There is absolutely no reason for these 'accidents' other than excessive speed (sometimes coupled with drinking). The standard of driving has dropped dramatically in recent years, with everyone tearing around like lunatics. No-one drives leisurely anymore. I frequently use the country lanes and am amazed at the number of people driving blindly towards me around bends at speed, with absolutely no idea of what they may encounter. Do they think they are invincible? I deliberately almost stop on some of these bends, to avoid possible collision with the clowns coming towards me. The other problem is drivers tailgating and seemingly unable to read road conditions ahead. They will go to great lengths to overtake, only to end up one or two cars ahead. Sometimes, as I am about to make a left turn, indicating well in advance, the following driver, instead of slowing down, maintains the same crazy speed and has to brake hard as he reaches my car which is negotiating the turn. Now with all the technology available in cars and sat nav installed in the later models, it shouldn't be too difficult to monitor the car's speed and control the engine revs when necessary, making it impossible to exceed the speed limit. My sat nav tells me the speed limits on any particular stretch of road and warns me in advance, so if it was connected to the engine, drivers would be unable to speed. How else are we going to stop these idiots? I couldn't care less if they kill themselves, but I do care about innocent people suffering. George Ody, Minehead.
