DELAYS of up to a month in carrying out repairs to faulty street lighting in several Minehead town centre roads have been reported.
The issue was investigated in early December by Cllr Mandy Chilcott, who represents the town on Somerset Council, and found to require work by National Grid.
But Cllr Chilcott said the company was unable to carry out all of the work until the second week in January.
Roads where the street lights were not working included Bancks Street, Summerland Road, and Irnham Road.
Cllr Chilcott said: “I have received a number of inquiries about several roads of lights that are out around the centre of town.
“These are due to electric supply cable faults and the repairs need to be carried out by National Grid.

“I asked whether they could be treated as a priority but am advised that the National Grid is currently dealing with a high volume of faults and are unable to offer any repairs before December 30.”
Cllr Chilcott said the company had targeted repairs in Bancks Street by December 30, Irnham Road by January 5, and Summerland Road by January 12.
She said: “There is a possibility that the faults may be connected, and if that is the case we can only hope they are all back on by December 30.”
Since putting the information on to social media, Cllr Chilcott has received further complaints about street lighting not working in Sainsbury Road near the community hall, Hawthorn Road, Staunton Road, Parkhouse Road, The Parks, in Irnham Road near the recreation ground entrance, and near the Tesco supermarket, as well as pedestrian crossing poles near the Butlin’s holiday resort.
Cllr Chilcott said people could themselves report faulty street lighting direct to Somerset Council via a portal on its website here.
