UNBEATEN Division Two leaders Alcombe Rovers passed their stiffest test so far this season when they came away from second-placed Wellworthy Saints with a 3-2 win.
The result dropped Saints to third place and gave Rovers a ten-point lead over Sampford Blues, who they entertain tomorrow (Saturday).
Alcombe took the lead after 15 minutes when Derek Leitch netted after a solo run, and ten minutes later they were 2-0 up when Pete Adams worked his way to the bye-line and his cross was deflected in by Sean Pople for an own goal.
After a further ten minutes a good passage of play by Wellworthy resulted in their first goal, but Jason Hill made it 3-1 before half-time when he received the ball on the edge of the box, turned his marker and drove the ball home.
The second half saw Saints applying concerted pressure and they finally reduced the deficit to 3-2 after 20 minutes.
They went in search of the equaliser and keeper Derek Jones had to make some good saves to keep them out.
With 15 minutes to go, Alcombe brought on Matthew Lawrence, returning from injury, and his and Leitch's pace eased the pressure and caused Saints numerous problems.
Two or three clear-cut chances were created but although Alcombe couldn't convert them they were more than happy to finish 3-2 ahead.
Man of the match was defender Ross Baker.

Minehead Sports went top of Division Three with a 6-2 home dismissal of Westonzoyland.
They started strongly and missed early chances before going ahead when a good cross from Neil Watson set up Adam Elston to net from close range.
A good run by Tommy Todd ended with him being bustled over in the penalty area and Alex Dixon made it 2-0 from the spot.
Then a good ball from P Langdon put Watson through and he rounded the keeper to put Sports three up before the break.
The second half started with Westonzoyland looking more dangerous having made positional changes, but it was Sports who scored first when Todd was set up by Watson for a tap-in and made it 4-0.
The visitors pulled a goal back but Todd then rounded off a solo run with fine finish to make it 5-1.
Westonzoyland cut the deficit again but Sports deservedly had the last word when Karl Griffiths' crossfield ball found Muscroft who shot past the keeper.
Men of the match were Will Giblett and P Langdon.
