The Town Clerk for Watchet Town Council, has been honoured with a surprise reception in recognition of her 20-year service with the authority.

Sarah Reed joined the authority in August 2002 as the Finance Officer and after being in her role for around 12 months she was promoted to Town Clerk. Sarah gained her Certificate in Local Council Administration in 2005 to certify her as a qualified Clerk, and this was followed by 2 years studying part time at Gloucester University to attain her Certificate in Local Policy. Councillors presented Sarah with a glass ornament, gift vouchers, champagne, bouquet, and a magnificent cake which they all shared and a signed card.

Cllr Olivia Campbell, Chair of Watchet Town Council and Mayor of Watchet said: “It was an honour and pleasure to celebrate Sarah’s 20 years of efficient and devoted service to the people and town of Watchet. Known for her eagle eye and attention to detail, surprising her with a presentation of cards, gifts and snacks was quite an achievement, many thanks to Jo Grellier for undertaking this secret mission and choosing such lovely mementos. We are well aware how lucky we are to have Sarah and hope her next party is her 25th anniversary rather than her retirement. Thanks to all who contributed to a pleasant afternoon and my fellow councillors who took time out to attend where they could”

Sarah Reed said “I was totally surprised by the reception and would like to thank everyone who contributed to the thoughtful gifts, and I appreciate all the kind words. It was wonderful to be acknowledged for a job I love (well most of the time!).

“Working for a local authority is a very challenging role, Watchet Town Council are a pro-active Council and the staff and Councillors all work very hard to look after the wonderful Watchet Community. I am particularly fortunate to have a fantastic Council team to support me in my role, which at times can be demanding and diverse, but also rewarding to know that you can make a difference. I have worked and continue to work hard to ensure that the Council conduct their business lawfully and in line with current procedures and legislation.

“I have worked with some wonderful councillors over the years, Sally de Renzy-Martin, Doug Webber and David Banks to name a few who are no longer with us, and look forward to a good working relationship with current councillors as we face the added challenge of the new Unitary Authority in 2023.”
