THE world renowned Red Arrows display team should be looping the loop in the skies above Minehead on what will hopefully be their third visit to the town in August. The crowd pulling aerobatic entertainers are once again the star attraction of the annual Minehead Summer Festival, which is being extended from one to four days. Organisers will be keeping their fingers crossed for fine weather after rain and low cloud forced the top RAF team to pull out of performing at last year's event. The overcast conditions meant planned displays by the Red Devils freefall parachute team and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight were also abandoned. Minehead Events Group, which organises the festival with support from holiday giant Butlin's, West Somerset Council, Minehead Town Council and the Minehead Vision Group, is said to be working around the clock to ensure the 2014 event is one to remember. In addition to last year's line-up, this year's festival will feature a Spitfire and the RAF Tutor Display Team and will run for four days. As well as the high-flying action on the first day, there will be stalls and entertainment on the seafront, a continental market, fun attractions for children and crafts. And organisers are promising a 'golden opportunity' for local bands and musicians to perform with venues secured thanks to the Beach Hotel and Hobby Horse - both in prime locations close to the action. The space will be offered free of charge with performers able to ask for donations either towards their own costs or a charitable cause. Organisers are now appealing for local people to come forward and help, either by businesses offering sponsorship or residents volunteering to act as marshals and ambassadors to welcome visitors. Cllr Paul Grierson, who represents the town on both the town and district councils and is a member of the Minehead Events Group, said the decision to extend the festival to four days was aimed at maximising entertainment for visitors and residents and to provide a boost to the local economy. "I can promise we are all working extremely hard to make Minehead Summer Festival a success and we would warmly welcome volunteers who want to be involved in making the most of Minehead," he said. "There will be lots to do and so much to enjoy. We are grateful for the sponsorship we have already received and look forward to even more support. "If people can volunteer a few hours of their time to help as marshals we would be delighted to hear from them." The seafront stalls and attractions will run for the full four days of the festival, with other, as yet unconfirmed, activities also in the pipeline. The festival will start on August 13 and will be immediately followed by the annual Blue Anchor to Minehead Raft Race on August 17 - one of the biggest fundraisers staged by the local RNLI which traditionally culminates in a spectacular fireworks display at the harbour. The town will also host the second Minehead Harbour Festival on July 12, featuring a range of entertainment and a pig roast.
