TWO students from West Somerset Community College have been honoured for their commitment to a pioneering scheme which allows them to learn work-related skills while still at school.

Andrew Fox and Dean Richards have been taking part in the Key Skills and Youth Award through the college, which has seen them link up with Minehead employer Premier Garage.

Through the partnership with the garage, they have been set a series of assignments to help them handle money, understand their local community and use their leisure time effectively.

They have also had to prove their ability to work independently without supervision and contribute effectively to a team.

Premier Garage parts manager Robin Cramp presented each of the boys with a certificate and a £10 gift voucher in recognition of their successes.

He also spoke to other students at the college about the importance of work-related skills such as a willingness to learn, reliability and the desire to do a job well.

Garage mechanic Andrew Birkett was also on hand to speak to students taking part in the award course and said it was also important to get on well with work colleagues.

Scheme co-ordinator Peter French congratulated the students and said he hoped the partnership with the garage would continue.

"This is an important development in the growing vocational curriculum at the college and we hope to secure additional partners in other work areas to help and encourage the students," he said.
